Battery Types – General Inormation

How a Battery Works

A battery is a source of electrical energy that stores electricity for future use. It develops voltage from the chemical reaction produced when two unlike materials, such as the positive and negative plates, are immersed in the electrolyte, a solution of sulphuric acid and water. In a typical 6 cells lead-acid battery, the voltage is approximately 2.1 volts per cell, for a total of 12.6 volts. Electricity flows from the battery as soon as there is a circuit connection between the positive and negative terminals. This happens when any load that needs electricity, such as the engine, the radio or any other electrical devices are connected to the battery.

Lead Acid Battery Types

Lead-acid batteries can be divided into two main groups: SLI and Deep Cycle. They are used for a vast number of purposes, but all batteries provide either starting or deep cycle power. The only difference is how much power is delivered and for how long it needs to be delivered.

SLI - Starting, Lightning and lgnition

Most known as automotive batteries, SLI are commonly used to start and run engine of vehicles, SUV's, trucks and tractors. They deliver a large starting current of high power for a short time to start the vehicle engine. They can be divided into two groups: Standard or Maintenance Free.

a) Standard Battery: with removable caps, also known as gang vented batteries, these batteries are typically lead antimony gravity cast plates, old technology prior to the 80's. They need regular water replacement and have shorter life.

b) Maintenance Free: with sealed cover and flame arrestors at the breathers, the Sealed Maintenance Free is the newest technology in the market and features high quality and minimal water consumption characteristics. The Maintenance Free battery is designed with lead calcium alloy technology for both positive and negative plates. It has much higher cranking performance and longer shelf and cycle life than standard conventional batteries.

Note: Some European manufacturers may call a lead calcium battery with central degassing screw caps, known as KAMINA system, a maintenance free battery. However, the caps can be seen and removed when the labels are off. The truly maintenance free sealed batteries such as the Probe Premium require no maintenance and allow no access to the battery, thus reducing the risk of contamination considerably.
